Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I water my lawn?

It is recommended to deep water your lawn to saturate your soil. Lightly watering your lawn only contributes to weed and disease problems. A good rule of thumb is one hour of watering delivers one inch. However, every system is different and should be measured to assure proper delivery. We recommend watering no more than three times a week during dry periods, and never water daily unless we have freshly seeded the lawn. Then and only then is it imperative to keep seed bed moist.

What height should I mow my lawn?

Mowing is the number one cultural practice that is mismanaged. Certainly different grass species have different needs, but the general rule of thumb is to cut very high in the summer months and never mow closer than two inches at any time. Never cut off more than 1/3 of the grass blade at any one time.

What is the best time to aerate and seed my lawn?

Northern Virginia is in a transition zone. This means we experience four seasonal changes. Primarily we are planting cool season grasses, which build root systems over the winter. With this in mind, the fall would be the most appropriate season to establish new turf grass.

What are the benefits of using granulated products?

Granulated products can be applied with common spreader equipment. This allows for a more even application. Granular turf fertilizer maintains a longer residual than liquid fertilizer. There is little chance for loss of material due to volatilization or leaching using professional granulated products.

How often are services provided?

During the course of an annual contract, T.B.I. provides five services. Each application is applied approximately 8-12 weeks apart.
